Pamukkale está situado em Denizli, Turquia, aproximadamente a 600 km de Istambul. Próximo a Éfeso, é uma visita imperdível para quem vai à Capadócia.
Formada por um conjunto de piscinas termais de origem calcária, Pamukkale, em turco, significa “Castelo de Algodão”. Esse termo descreve perfeitamente o local, que à distância parece uma paisagem coberta de neve, uma nuvem sobre o solo ou algodão estendido sobre a terra. É deslumbrante.
Toda essa beleza natural deve-se às fontes térmicas sob o monte, que provocam o derramamento de carbonato de cálcio, o qual depois se solidifica como mármore travertino. Pamukkale foi declarada Patrimônio Mundial da UNESCO juntamente com Hierápolis em 1988.
Já Hierápolis, que significa “Cidade Sagrada”, foi construída no século II a.C. e faz parte do complexo de Pamukkale. A visita é recomendada por sua importância histórica e cultural. Foi uma das cidades mais importantes do Império Romano, representada pelo grandioso Teatro Romano. Hierápolis abriga o maior número de túmulos de gladiadores, e diz a lenda que Cleópatra também gostava de se banhar em suas piscinas termais.
